Having sex on your periods

Having sex on your period can be a totally normal, enjoyable experience, just like the sex you have any other time of the month. While there are many shame-based narratives surrounding sex while on your period (it’s gross, it’s messy, your partner won’t like it), it’s possible to have great sex while on your period.

The possible benefits of having sex during menstruation include:

  • shorter periods due to uterine contractions during orgasm
  • lighter, less painful periods
  • reduced stress
  • improved sleep
  • Headache relief
  • strengthened immune system
  • improved fitness

You don’t actually bleed that much. The average amount of blood loss each month is only about 60 milliliters, which is roughly 4 tablespoons. Meaning, if the mess is something that concerns you, it’s not as much blood as you may think. Also, nothing can happen to your partner if they come in contact with your period blood, assuming you do not currently have an STI.

Sex drive on your period can vary. Physiologically, a person is at their most aroused during ovulation and not during menstruation. Our natural sex drive is designed to peak at the time we are most fertile.

Basically, there is no scientific reason that period sex would “feel” any different or that you might be more aroused during menstruation. If anything, your sex drive would likely be lower. However, a person’s sex drive is complicated and affected by many other variables than just hormones.

Orgasms can alleviate menstrual cramps. According to Cigna Health, many women report a decrease in menstrual cramp pain after having an orgasm. Experts believe this is because the act of having an orgasm uses up prostaglandins, which are the same chemicals that cause the cramping in the first place.

Period sex can actually decrease the length of your period. The contractions that your uterus does when you have an orgasm can speed up the menstruation process. With enough orgasms, you could shed a day or two off of your period, but of course, every body is different and more research is needed in this area.

Having sex during menstruation can sometimes be messy. However, there are some steps people can take if they are worried about this, such as:

  • using towels to cover sheets or other surfaces
  • having sex in the shower
  • staying in the missionary position or laying on one side
  • using a condom.

Let me know what you think in the comment section. You can as well ask any questions for clarification, I will answer to the best of my knowledge!

Vaginal Discharge

Let’s first understand that vaginal discharge is totally normal. This vaginal discharge is acidic enough to bleach fabric hence the discoloration of panties. Remember in the first blog I said that the vagina cleans itself, hence the vaginal discharge.

However, there are certain types of discharge that can indicate an infection. Abnormal discharge may be yellow or green, chunky in consistency, or foul smelling. Yeast or a bacterial infection usually causes abnormal discharge. If you notice any discharge that looks unusual or smells foul, see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. There are several different types of vaginal discharge. These types are categorized based on their color and consistency. Some types of discharge are normal. Others may indicate an underlying condition that requires treatment.

White
A bit of white discharge, especially at the beginning or end of your menstrual cycle, is normal. However, if the discharge is accompanied by itching and has a thick, cottage cheese-like consistency or appearance, it’s not normal and needs treatment. This type of discharge may be a sign of a yeast infection.

Clear and watery
A clear and watery discharge is perfectly normal. It can occur at any time of the month. It may be especially heavy after exercise.

Clear and stretchy
When discharge is clear but stretchy and mucous-like, rather than watery, it indicates that you are likely ovulating. This is a normal type of discharge.

Brown or bloody
Brown or bloody discharge is usually normal, especially when it occurs during or right after your menstrual cycle. A late discharge at the end of your period can look brown instead of red. You may also experience a small amount of bloody discharge between periods. This is called spotting.

If spotting occurs during the normal time of your period and you’ve recently had sex without protection, this could be a sign of pregnancy. Spotting during an early phase of pregnancy can be a sign of miscarriage, so it should be discussed with your OB-GYN.

In rare cases, brown or bloody discharge can be a sign of endometrial or cervical cancer. It could be other problems such as fibroids or other abnormal growths. This is why it’s important to get a yearly pelvic exam and Pap smear. Your gynecologist will check for cervical abnormalities during these procedures.

Yellow or green
A yellow or green discharge, especially when it’s thick, chunky, or accompanied by an unpleasant smell, isn’t normal. This type of discharge may be a sign of the infection trichomoniasis. It’s commonly spread through sexual intercourse.

Abnormal vaginal discharge, however, is usually caused by an infection. Such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, yeast infection, gonorrhea and chlamydia, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), Human Papillomavirus (HPV) or cervical cancer. In the next blogs we will delve into each of these diseases, to know their causes, how to prevent and cure them.

Prevention/Home care for vaginal discharge
To prevent infections, practice good hygiene and wear breathable cotton underwear. Don’t use douches as explained in the first blog, as they can make discharge worse by removing useful bacteria. Also, practice safe sex and use protection to avoid STIs.

To decrease the likelihood of yeast infections when taking antibiotics, eat yogurt that contains live and active cultures. If you know you have a yeast infection, you can also treat it with an over-the-counter yeast infection cream or suppository.

Hair beneath

When we were young adolescents, we couldn’t wait to see strands of hair in our private parts to prove that we were now adults. Now all we want to do is shave it clean. Don’t you think if pubic hair didn’t have a purpose the human body would be adapted to it? On today’s blog/class we’ll look into the function of pubic hair. By this I mean hair around your coochie and penis.

Most of us would rather clean shave pubic hair due to the perceived hygienic reasons. Shaving leads to unnecessary wounding of the skin and also leaves one with rashes and bumps. It often causes an allergic reaction.

Above all else, this hair also helps to increase pleasure during sex for both parties. It also acts as a protective buffer and lessens friction. Some sources even refer to pubic hair as a “dry lubricant.” That’s because it’s easier to rub hair against hair than it is to rub skin against skin. Pubic hair may also keep the genitals warm, which is an important factor in sexual arousal.

People who do a lot of landscaping in their nether areas are exposed to the risk of contracting STIs, UTIs, yeast infections, vaginitis and cellulitis. This is because the wounds created by razors leave unhealed openings that can be easily infected. Pubic hair, like eyelashes or nose hair, traps dirt and harmful microorganisms.

It’s not very safe to wax the area or use creams to get rid of excessive hair. This is not to insinuate that you should let your hair grow to the point it can now be braided. So long as you regularly wash and keep it clean, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. You can remove pubic hair by shaving, trimming with a scissor, waxing or laser treatment.

Removing pubic hair is solely a choice, but it is not recommended. Whichever method you decide, use caution. The safest method is trimming with a scissors. Buy one small scissor that is exclusively for trimming, ensure to keep it clean and dry always.

Ultimately, a person needs to do what makes them happiest.

Does the coochie become tighter after a break from sex?

Couple_love_infinity

“Many people falsely assume that women who have less sex have ‘tighter’ vaginas, and women who have more sex have ‘looser’ vaginas- but this is just a complete misconception,” says women’s health specialist Jennifer Wider, M.D. “The muscles in your vagina are elastic hence contract and go back to their normal shape after sexual intercourse and also after child birth.”

“The other time your vagina changes is as you get older. As women age, their hormone levels drop, which means the vaginal walls thin out and become less elastic, so the muscles may get looser. The good news is that the tone of the muscles can be improved by kegel exercises, no matter the age of the woman,” says Wider.

Truth is, taking a break from sex doesn’t tighten the vagina. Well, I know some ladies will completely disagree with this. It’s facts it’s not just my opinion. Some times we take a break from sex because of many reasons; we have probably been busy with work/school/life, maybe you just ended a relationship and you want to breathe. You start hanging out with the squad who swear by the slogan men are trash! But hey, are they? So now you give yourself a 3 months period of not having sex because you think your vagina will tighten, and the next man who’ll have it will worship the floor you walk on!

See, when you have sex after a long period and you feel as though it’s tight, what happens is that you are nervous or probably not aurosed enough or not comfortable. Just take your time make sure your partner employs foreplay, you can even use lube. Wait until your muscles are relaxed enough to slide anything inside. Soo, if it feels like your vagina is tight during sex, it’s definitely not because you recently went through a dryspell.

Let’s backtrack to the kegel exercises. One day I’m at work and you know the normal lunch time stories, catching up on office gossip and what not. So I happened to be with my immediate boss who’s a pretty young lady in her early 30s with two kids. I can’t remember exactly how our conversation got to tutorials on how to perform kegel exercises. What she does is, when she’s seated mostly at work, she tries to squeeze in her vaginal muscles such that she’s holding them tight, counts to 5, releases and does it frequently about 10 to 15 times.

Another way you can do kegel exercise, is when you’re going to pee. Don’t just splash it out like a pressure pipe. Hold it in and let it out little by little rather drop by drop. That way you’re exercising your muscles.             Kegel exercises is applicable to both men and women. Men ofcourse do it differently, I will have to consult a medic on this topic for proper information.

I hope this was helpful. Let me know what you think, ask any questions you have. All suggestions are welcome!

Here’s my previous post if you didn’t get to read it! https://cexuel.health.blog/2020/07/26/pudesh-basics/

Pudesh basics

Who knew I’d be here starting a blog about sexual health?! Lol! It all started as a joke posting on my whatsapp status and friends would encourage me to blog about it. I’d be like, meeh, it’s just for fun. I didn’t realize it made sense to most people and some took notes. I mean,.. the pleasure is all mine!!

So basically this blog will be about sexual health for both genders. The do’s and don’ts to a healthy cooking jar and cooking stick. I’m not teaching people how to have bomb sex or tactics to make that man stick around. Don’t gerrit twisted! He’s gonna cheat if he wants to anyway.

For my first class with the ladies, we’ll look into how to care for your vagina. These are the mere basics. By the way, let no man lie to you that vagina should smell like a garden of roses. Does his dick smell like a stick of candy? Natural odor of a vagina can be described as ‘fleshy’. This is a whole topic by itself.

I tried to explain it using a picture

Nia Long said her secret to looking young is water, sex and vitamins. It’s recommended Atleast 8 glasses of water a day. See, when you take your water faithfully, you won’t have time for bullshit in your life. You know why? You’ll spend most of your time rushing to pee.

Ladies, always urinate immediately after sex. This helps to flush out harmful bacteria that may have entered your urethra during intercourse. Also helps to prevent UTIs. Make it a habit! I would like to debank a myth that when you urinate after sex it prevents pregnancy. No honey, if you didn’t use protection it’s done for you! Unless you planned it or you were on your safe days.

Do not douche your pudesh while bathing. The vagina naturally cleans itself, hence the discharge, so no need of douching. This leads to the next point, when bathing wash the outside don’t go in. Leading to the next point, don’t use scented soaps, gels or fluids to wash the vagina. You may alter the vagina’s pH. And finally, just let it breathe! Don’t spray anything. Just let it be.

Feel free to let me know what topics we would discuss and what you think of today’s class. I will be posting every Sunday afternoon.
